New Raspberry Pi Zero W

A new board is out, mine is coming soon!

Great Scott! Raspberry Pi W with WIFI and Bluetooth

A surprise email came to me this morning. A new model of Raspberry Pi is available for purchase! The Raspberry Pi Zero W  sports a WIFI and Bluetooth connectivity and improved CPU speed. Since both chips are relatively small, it was an obvious choice to add them to the smallest of the boards. This means that your smaller projects no longer will suffer from connectivity issues.

I’m pleased to say my Raspberry Pi Zero W is on its way, and I will be able to show it to you soon! What’s new:

Raspberry Pi Zero W (Wireless) Details:

  • BCM2835 (same as Pi 1) but up-clocked to 1GHz, so 40% faster
  • 512MB RAM
  • Mini HDMI
  • USB On-The-Go port
  • Micro USB power
  • HAT-compatible 40-pin header
  • Composite video and reset headers
  • CSI camera connector
  • 802.11b/g/n Wireless LAN
  • Bluetooth 4.1
  • Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE)

This is a very welcome change. The board only costs £9.60 with kits available at £15. The Pi Hut expects big order queues and up to 3 days for processing each order. I know from past experience that Raspberry Pi Zero was hard to get, and I believe a similar fate will greet the Raspberry Pi Zero W

How to use Raspberry PI as WOL (wake on lan) server

While you could wake up your PC from a mobile directly, having a dedicated server capable of doing so is the best solution. The reason is simple. You can hook up as many devices as you wish with a single endpoint. This is why Raspberry Pi is perfect for this.

Slow Internet Warning

From time to time my Internet grinds to a stop. Since Raspberry Pi 4 comes with a 1Gbps Ethernet, I decided to take advantage of it and create a reporting system in NodeRED that will monitor and report when the ISP is not keeping the contractual agreements. Works with Alexa, Google Home, Android and Windows 10.
